Keep your toddlers entertained!
Tregongeeves is welcoming many families with small children this summer. We’re having some glorious beach weather in Cornwall – but what do you do to keep your toddlers entertained when you’ve had enough of paddling and sandcastles?
Read on for some lovely things to do in Cornwall with your smallest family members in mind. These are pocket-friendly too, and we’ve included Porthpean and Caerhays beaches because they are firm favourites within our family.
This historic harbour village is one of our favourite family days out. Enjoy lunch in the very child friendly Longstore – with sea views and amazing food you will not be disappointed. We forgo pudding, but head to Tallships Creamery – a tiny little ice cream shop that sells toddler ice cream cones for £1. Perfectly sized for little hands and mouths.
Our children love running freely around Heligan – whether you come during the holiday or throughout the year there is always so much to do. You can buy annual membership which is really good value if you think you’ll make a few visits and the restaurant here is a cosy, family friendly space. Check their website for events and special themed activities for younger children.
On the whole we avoid Soft Play, but Jungle Jacks is just a little bit special. It is very well laid out, it is not huge so you don’t lose your children and it has a lovely and very well priced cafe. A large jug of squash with as many cups as you like is £1 and there is a brilliant selection of freshly cooked food. It is worth noting your are not permitted to take in your own food and drink, but entry price is more than reasonable.
Whether you fancy a long walk, short walk, a bike ride, barbecue or just a play area and a coffee Cardinham Woods has a lot of offer families of all ages and walking/cycling abilities. The shortest walk is pretty flat and ideal for little legs. The bribe of an ice cream at the end of the circular route usually helps tired legs! There is a small charge for parking, but baby changing and toilet facilities are excellent – and scrupulously clean.
Expect the drive here to take 25-30 minutes in the summer. We think it really is worth it, especially if you have a barbecue and make a day of it. The iron barbecues are on a flat grassy space by the river and there is no charge. Just remember to bring coals and firelighters!
Children love exploring these beach no matter what time of year it is. Porthpean is ideal for families, it’s a small cove with lovely rock pools to explore at low tide and is great for paddling. Plenty of parking and a seasonal cafe, toilets open daily. Caerhays (sometimes called Porthluney Beach) is another favourite in our family. Just a short drive from Tregongeeves, Caerhays has soft sand and is in a sheltered cove. The cafe serves a good food and drinks selection and toilet facilities are available.
Keep your toddlers entertained on the farm
Don’t forget that our farm is really well equipped with suitable activities for all ages that are no extra cost. We have a bright, clean Play Barn with soft play, Wendy House and a good selection of toys. Everything has been given the seal of approval of our own grandchildren – especially the dressing up box! Parents need some quiet time on holiday too so you’ll also find newspapers and coffee. And table tennis and air hockey for older children. Our library is well stocked for all ages and we check it regularly to make sure everything is in good, clean condition.
Our pool is heated to a comfortable temperature. If you venture to the outside play area or tennis courts you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous views across the valley. Farm animals are part of our daily life and you’re welcome to say hello to the animals. Do check with Judith about collecting fresh eggs from our chickens – a relaxing holiday activity for all children. This doesn’t just keep your toddlers entertained!
