A trip to Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the beach. From rugged cliffs and outcrops on the north coast, to the calmer sailing waters on the south coast, we’re lucky to have so much choice. Our personal favourites locally include Porthpean, Caerhays, Gorran Haven and Pentewan beaches.
Just a few
Local beaches
Some of the most beautiful bays in Cornwall are just a short drive away. Right on our doorstep we have Porthpean and Pentewan. And if you fancy exploring slightly further afield, there are many beautiful beaches within easy reach of Tregongeeves, including Perranporth and the golden beaches of Newquay on the North Coast.
Near Charlestown
Porthpean beach
Porthpean, near the historic village of Charlestown, is our personal favorite. Just a 10 minute drive away and ideal for families, it’s a small cove with lovely rock pools to explore at low tide and is great for paddling. There’s plenty of parking and a seasonal cafe, with toilets open daily.
Under 10 minutes
Pentewan beach
Also just 10 minutes down the road, the glorious sands of Pentewan beach stretch for over half a mile, and the beach is suitable for swimming, surfing and other watersports. There’s free parking, cafes and toilets located 500 meters from the beach in Pentewan village.
A family favourite
Porthluney beach
Caerhays (sometimes called Porthluney Beach) is another favourite in our family. Just a short drive from Tregongeeves, Caerhays has soft sand and is in a sheltered cove. The cafe serves a good food and drinks selection and toilet facilities are available.
Great sheltered position
Gorran Haven
A secluded cove that’s great for families, and popular for kayaking, swimming and surfing due its sheltered position. There’s a pub, beach shop, toilets and plenty of parking available. Gorran Haven is also dog-friendly, though they must be kept on a lead.
Golden sandy beaches
Newquay beaches
Whether you’re looking for family fun, a relaxing cove or pumping surf, Newquay boasts some of the most beautiful golden sandy beaches in Cornwall, and is only a 30 minute drive away. Choose from Perranporth Beach, Mawgan Porth, Watergate Bay, or the iconic Fistral Beach – all worth a visit to catch a wave or glorious north-coast sunset.

Eat at the beach too
No cooking? No problem! A meal at the relaxed, family-friendly Sam’s on the Beach in nearby Polkerris comes with one of the best sea views in Cornwall. For fine dining there’s the Michelin starred Driftwood just 30 minutes down the coast from Tregongeeves. Or, if you would rather stay closer to home, try The Kingswood Bar and Restaurant which is just up the road.
